Under the leadership of Ms Leung Po Chu, former chairman of Po Leung Kuk, COA took the lead in introducing Cantonese Opera education courses into three Po Leung Kuk affiliated secondary schools and successfully launched the “Cantonese Opera Programme for Junior Secondary School”. Under the further guidance of Ms Leung Po Chu, the “Po Leung Kuk Cantonese Opera Fund” was established in 2017-18. For the first time, the COA provided professional Cantonese Opera training for the students of two Po Leung Kuk affiliated primary schools, namely Siu Hon Sum Primary School and Grandmont Primary School. By joining the programme, the two primary schools became the “Pilot Primary Schools for COA Courses”. The singing classes and acting classes, taught by 4 tutors, recruited students from Primary 3 to Primary 6. While the courses included singing, basic skills and acting lessons, the learning process involved the training of knowledge, skills and physique. Meanwhile, the curriculum also aimed at cultivating the students’ ability to appreciate traditional culture and fine arts. After the completion of each annual course, the “Cantonese Opera Arts Performance for Po Leung Kuk Affiliated Primary Schools” would be held to give an opportunity to students of the two primary schools to perform on the stage and showcase their learning achievements.
